conceptual diagram of acho lure useThe ancient Chamorros used acho‘ achuman to lure fish from the deep ocean to the surface. Day after day fisherman would take their boats out into the ocean and lower the acho‘ achuman lure over the side. The lure was a heavy stone sinker and a coconut shell filled with mashed coconut meat. As it sank into the water, it was rattled and the coconut meat spilled out. The noise and smell attracted fish, but they were still too deep for the fisherman to catch. Each day the fisherman placed the ancho‘ achuman higher and higher in the water, drawing the fish closer to the surface. Eventually, the fish were trained to look for the lure and they followed it to the fisher's boat. When the fish were close enough, they could be scooped up in nets.
